Emotional moment deaf woman hears for the first time ever

For 40 years, Joanne Milne was deaf, suffering from the medical condition Usher Syndrome. As a result of the syndrome she also lost her vision in her twenties. The incredible moment she hears a nurse going through the days of the week was filmed in a small hospital room in Birmingham. Joanne can be seen bursting into tears of shock. Later on she said: "The switch-on was the most emotional and overwhelming experience of my life and I'm still in shock now. The first day everybody sounded robotic and I have to learn to recognise what these sounds are as I build a sound library in my brain." Report by Ashley Fudge.
