- description: The Indian Army has launched what could be one of the biggest human rescue operations ever in the country, in Uttarakhand. The Army has mobilized troops for rescue and relief efforts, as it simultaneously reached out to over 8000 people on all four different axes, viz, Rishikesh -- Uttarkashi -- Harsil -- Gangotri axis; Rudraprayag -- Kedarnath axis, Joshimath -- Badrinath axis and Dharchhula -- Tawaghat axis in Pithoragarh district. It also opened road up to Uttarkashi after clearing 16 landslides. Communication nodes have been established at Gaucher, Harsil, Joshimath and Rudraprayag to enable people to contact their families. 30 Satellite phones have so far been inducted, 20 more are likely to be inducted for use by stranded pilgrims. Army is presently carrying out reconnaissance to examine the feasibility of making a larger helipad at Gagaria on Hemkund Sahib axis so that large number of people can be evacuated using MI-17 helicopter. Efforts are presently underway to repair the bridge over Alaknanda between Govindghat and Ghagria on Hemkund Sahib road. Every year there are disaster from floods in India and this year is one of the heaviest. I remember that once Sri Rajaji the then Governor General of India had written in his magazine Swarjya, way back in 1950 or so that the solution to prevent such disaster is to link Ganges to Kanyakumari. No body ever bothered to this project. Unless there is a concrete steps taken in linking rivers in India such disaster and huge expenses on flood relief can be avoided. At least now, let us see, that the present Govt will see to this and do some thing on river out flow to entire India and avoid this type of disaster in future and also avoid this precious water went to sea as some states in India still longing for water. It is regrettable to notice no Govt since Independance gave any thought over this type of disaster and simply releasing funds as flood relief which is now equalling the cost of Ganga-Kanyakumari link. To avoid river water dispute in future I suggest that Govt should nationalise the river sharing by enacting suitable amendment in constitution to govern the water sharing between states in India. The present authorities seems to have no solution to the water crisis. However the Govt can get some ideas from other countries where sharing of water between the states and even between the different Govts are going on smoothly.
