- description: Merle Unkrich on the Place Based Science Inquiry Approach, Wapello Middle School This is good for them because to me what it does, if they didn't have any experience and they didn't have anybody down here at least showing them, they would sit here and not entertain themselves at all. So what it does, if they ever get outside, they are going to be able to entertain themselves. And a lot of these kids not ever being outside, they would just sit and say I don't have anything to do, but I think now maybe they would get in and at least be curious. If you add some sort of critter, you can almost always get them interested. It works pretty well and this class, this whole DNR, all these classes that are taught, the two classes that I have taken, it is very easy to get the kids interested almost immediately. As soon as they find out they can study beaver or any kind of fish. They love to fish. I asked them at the beginning what do you want to study. The first thing that came out of their mouths was fish. I actually have kids come up at the beginning of the day and instead of messing around in the halls, they are playing Fish Iowa! (card game). If I can just get them to say crappie instead of crappy, we would have it made. The little flipper thing - look, it looks like that. I think you are right. See its pinchers. It is, you are right. She's got a crawdad. And to me this just brings everything I taught together because otherwise it is just this disjointed lesson plan out of a book and it's a book that they didn't want to read because it is boring. Recording it on here. What are they doing across the river? They are testing the water for PH levels and turbidity. Where did you guys learn to do that? Yesterday. At school? Ah ha -- we learned how to do it. And then you gotta put in this chemical stuff in to see what color it turns. Oh yea, it sounds fun. Have you guys caught anything yet? Bugs -- little water penny beetles. I'm putting this net in the water and trying to catch wildlife but I haven't caught anything yet. You haven't caught anything? What have other people caught? I think just bugs. Can you tell what they are? Are they are the chart maybe? Yeah, that could be it or water boatman maybe. So, if you take care of what you have I think it makes a bigger impact on taking care of this here and then you can care about everything that is a little further away. But I don't think it makes since to start talking about polar bears and penguins even though yeah they are great animals to study, if you don't even know what is out your back door, are you ever going to see a penguin or a polar bear other than in a zoo, where you can come down here most days of the year and actually find something to do and something to be interested in. You already got a bird. You only get one bird. You get more than one bird. Did everyone get to see the turtle egg shell? It is so fresh there is still moisture on the inside. How many points do we have? That is how you can tell they are really leathery.
