- description: All the shot put throwers know about the New Zealand world class shot putters and world champions Valerie ADAMS and Jacko GILL , but no so many know that there is a 3rd great thrower in this relatively small country . Tom WALSH is 20 years old , he comes from Timaru in the South Island . Last year , as a junior , he won the Mannheim meeting with a 20,56m PB with the 6kg , ranking in the world top 5 juniors . At the end of 2011 he got a 18,83m PB with the 7kg at the Auckland Millenium shot put series . Now that Jacko GILL does not want to compete in the London Olympics , in spite of having a B qualification , it leaves the door open for Tom to play his card and try to qualify. Of course he has little chances to improve by some 1,5m in such a little time but it is worth trying . Coming from the Southern hemisphere winter, the New Zealander will be throwing in Europe till the last day . He started well in France at the Colmar meeting with a 19,16m new PB , first time and 4th New Zealander ever over 19m. Looking at this video of the competition , there is more to come . Keep going Tom , only 84cm to go to the IAAF B standard. DP
