- description: Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah confirmed at a news conference on Monday that separate shootings in Mississauga and Milton, Ont. left a total of two people dead — including a Toronto police officer — and three injured. Toronto Police Chief James Ramer identified the police officer who was fatally shot “at close range” as 48-year-old Const. Andrew Hong of traffic services, who had served for 23 years in the service. At the time, Hong had been participating in a joint training exercise with officers from Peel Regional Police and York Regional Police. According to Duraiappah, Hong had stopped in the area of Argentia Road and Winston Churchill Boulevard at around 2:15 p.m. local time. While on lunch break, he was shot in an “unprovoked” and “ambushed” attack, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Hong is survived by his wife, two children and his parents. In the same incident, a second innocent victim suffered “life-altering gunshot injuries” and is currently being treated at a trauma centre in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). A second incident was reported in the town of Milton, where Halton police received information of a shooting which resulted in one deceased and two additional injuries, which authorities believed to have resulted in the actions from the same suspect as earlier.
