  • description: Banknotes worth 65,240 dollars destroyed by termites in South China. Full story: An old lady's banknotes worth over 65-thousand U.S. dollars (400,000 yuan) were eaten by termites, according to a branch of the People's Bank of China in Guangdong Province. The money which the woman acquired from her children six months ago, was wrapped up in a plastic bag and put in a wooden drawer at home. The woman did not notice that her cash was being gnawed by termites until this April, when she opened the drawer to take out expenses for redecorating her house. She took the damaged notes to a local branch of the Agricultural Bank of China (ABC), hoping to reduce her losses. The bank identified just over 90-thousand yuan, equivalent of around fourteen-thousand-seven-hundred U.S. dollars. The remaining seriously damaged notes were sent to a branch of the People's Bank of China for further identification. The woman's loss may exceed around nine-thousand-eight-hundred U.S. dollars (60,000 yuan).
