Two women from Essex started the campaign to have the derogatory definition altered earlier this month - and what better ambassador to chat about the situation than the county’s most famous daughter, Gemma , in Sky News' new fancy 'glass box' studio. The current Oxford English Dictionary definition of ‘Essex Girl’ reads: “A contemptuous term applied (usu. joc.) to a type of young woman, supposedly to be found in and around Essex, and variously characterized as unintelligent, promiscuous, and materialistic.” The Collins [no relation] Dictionary throws in a “devoid of taste” for their definition, and quite rightly, the women of Essex are not happy and have a petition to have the term removed - and proud Essex women to post their success under #IAmAnEssexGirl. Even so, in an era of rapidly declining print sales across every paper product under the sun, Gemma issued a heartfelt rallying cry to keep the dictionary alive. "We should be promoting the dictionary anyway - because it's such an amazing historical British thing." But she did call for less stereotypical definition of the women of Essex. "For them to write that about us Essex girls, we are not happy," she said. "So keep us in the dictionary but please change the meaning. I think it should say an Essex girl is smart, sassy, fun and striving hard in life like everyone else."
