- description: A sign language interpreter is accused of making "meaningless gestures" as millions watched the Nelson Mandela memorial service. South Africa's deaf federation has confirmed that an interpreter using sign language during the Mandela memorial was a "fake". Concerns over the male interpreter had been raised by deaf people watching the service at Johannesburg's FNB Stadium on Tuesday. Bruno Druchen, national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa, said the unidentified man who was on stage alongside world leaders including US President Barack Obama, "was moving his hands around but there was no meaning in what he used his hands for". South African parliament member Wilma Newhoudt, a member of the ruling party, also said the man communicated nothing with his hand and arm movement. Both Mr Druchen and Ms Newhoudt are deaf. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country's 11 official languages, according to the federation. Nicole Du Toit, an official sign language interpreter who also watched the broadcast, said the man on stage was an "embarrassment". She said: "It was horrible, an absolute circus, really really bad. "Only he can understand those gestures." Did the sign language translator alongside speakers at Nelson Mandela memorial make up hand gestures as he went along? Deaf groups claim his movements were meaningless Standing on stage during televised event at the FNB stadium Some members of the deaf community took to Twitter to express outrage The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela's memorial has been accused of being 'a fake' because he was not signing properly. The man was standing on the stage during the televised event at the FNB stadium south of Johannesburg yesterday and was meant to be translating the proceedings for members of the deaf community. But Braam Jordaan, a deaf South African and board member of the World Deaf Federation, said he believes the interpreter was making up signs as he went along. The structure of his hand, facial expressions and the body movements did not follow what the speaker was saying', Mr Jordaan told the SBS news website. Mr Jordaan claimed the man, who signed for a portion of the ceremony including Barack Obama's speech, was simply making up his own signs. 'I was really upset and humiliated', he told the SBS news website, 'He made up his own signs. 'What happened at the memorial service is truly disgraceful thing to see - it should not happen at all. 'What happened today will be forever aligned with Nelson Mandela & Deaf Community, thanks to this fake interpreter.' The Limping Chicken, a leading UK news blog for the deaf, commented: 'The 'interpreter' signed in a way I've never seen before, a strange repetitive rhythm to his movements -- his signs appearing to come in threes or fours, occasionally swinging his shoulders, as if he was signing along with an intermittent beat. 'Most puzzlingly, the structure of his hand and body movements didn't seem to change no matter what the speaker was saying.' Francois Deysel, a Cape Town sign language teacher tweeted, '@ BrunoDruchen @ ANC_@KKhoza please get him off this is an embarrassment, no signs make sense, he is moving his arms try to look busy.' 'If he values his life he must come clean because the deaf community throughout the world are outraged.' She said not one of his signs had anything to do with sign language. 'It was like getting somebody off the street and telling them to flap their hands around,' said Ms Loening. 'This man made a mockery of the service. How disrespectful for what Madiba stood for.' 'Deaf people had very, very little access to information from the memorial service.'
