- description: Germany went up against New Zealand in their Pool B contest in the Women's Hockey World League in Rotterdam. In a highly anticipated contest that proved to be full of drama, the Germans prevailed 3-2. New Zealand were in fine form coming into this game, scoring seven against India the previous day. Germany, however, looked strong in the first period as they went two goals to the good and could have scored more. Tina Bachmann and Julia Muller combined put the Germans ahead after 8 minutes. Bachmann's strike from a well-worked penalty corner was deflected in by Muller and made it 1-0. New Zealand were not without their chances in the first half. Gemma Flynn made a strong run towards the German goal but her shot was smothered by the onrushing Barbara Vogel. However, the Germans doubled their lead. Franzisca Hauke burst through the New Zealand defence to allow Elieen Hoffmann to net from close range past to take the score to 2-0. Despite controlling much of the game, Germany still found themselves having to defend. Early in the second half the hugely impressive Gemma Flynn was again involved. She set up Katie Glynn whose shot was well blocked by Bachmann to keep the German lead. A blockbuster finish capped off a thrilling fixture. New Zealand were throwing everything towards the German goal, and eventually it paid off with less than ten minutes to play. Charlotte Harrisson scored from close-range to make it 2-1 and the game was alive. Yet the goal came at a price. In their desire to level the scoring, the Black Sticks had pulled off their goalkeeper and the Germans were able to get their third of the game when Franzisca Hauke ran clear and finished into an unguarded net. 3-1 with five minutes on the clock. And it proved to be too much for the New Zealanders. Despite pulling the score to 3-2 through Kayla Sharland, the clock was against them. At the buzzer, it ended 3-2 to the Germans in an incredible finale. Teams; Germany; Bachmann, Hillmann, Hasselmann, Hoffmann, Kruger, Vogel (GK), Andersch, Hauke, Stockel, Muller-Wieland, Muller(C).
