- description: On April 5, 2014 revelers in Isla Vista, CA, the student community of next door UC Santa Barbara, celebrated an annual holiday called Deltopia. 15,000 partiers descended on the 1 square mile community. At ~9:44pm a riot began on the 66 block of Del Playa. This is a compilation of videos taken firsthand to document what happened. Below is a play-by-play from my perspective. 9:30: Cop is struck in the head with backpack filled with bottles at beginning of 67 block Del Playa. 9:44: Riot police and SWAT vehicle barricade corner of Del Playa and Camino del Sur. Everyone walking toward this intersection is moshed into one large, drunk crowd. 9:50-10:15: Bottles, bricks, cans, anything and everything is thrown towards shielded police line by a few UC, CC, and out-of-town partiers. All groups had their fair share in participating in the riot, that's a fact. 9:50-10:15: Sheriff gets on the loudspeaker of SWAT vehicle and repeatedly warns crowd to disperse or they will be subject to tear gas and arrest. This only incites the crowd even more. 9:57: Helicopter spotted above Del Playa, it circles and shines a spotlight on the crowd. 9:58-10:10: Flashbangs dispersed in front of crowd. Instead of scaring the crowd it only makes the rioters angrier. The violence increases. 10:00: Beer bottle is thrown from somewhere behind me hits me and hits my elbow, shattering. "Fuck this noise" and I decide to stop filming so close to the front of the crowd, and move back towards my house in the middle of the block. 10:10: Crowd gets rowdier. Dumpsters are taken from the sides and tipped over, ridden by some rioters, and pushed towards the police line. Trashcans and bikes are added to a makeshift blockade. 10:20: Tear gas is deployed at end of 66 block Del Playa. Crowd retreats halfway down the block. Police begin to effectively clear Del Playa. 10:30: Police have now marched to the middle of the 66 block Del Playa, deploying tear gas the entire way through and clearing balconies, front yards, and of course the street. 10:50: Entire 66 block of Del Playa is now empty except for waves of officers in gas masks patrolling the street. Tear gas has now subsided outside of my house and I am able to get outside to snap a few more pictures. Broken glass and trash lines the street.
