  • description: Four people were arrested and a severed pig head was thrown at police during a far-right anti-Islamic protest organised by the English Defense League (EDL) as it marched through Moortown estate in Leeds on Saturday. At least one person arrested was a female. The march was held to protest plans to turn a derelict pub into an Islamic Community Centre. According to locals, the old Lingfield pub had been abandoned and closed for six years. The EDL says they want to prevent the estate from "becoming another Muslim area". After the estate was bought by the UK Islamic Mission in February, the words "a mosque" were written in graffiti on one side of the building. The UK Islamic Mission planned to transform the former pub into a library, gym, prayer and IT suite that could fit up to 70 worshippers. The EDL was founded in 2009. The leader of the EDL, Stephen Lennon, was arrested in January for attempting to enter the US using someone else's passport and sentenced to ten months in jail. He was initially apprehended at JFK airport but fled before flying back to the UK using his own passport, where he was arrested.
