  • description: This moth was resting on my back porch wall, and took a look at it through the camera. It's "horn" is broken, its injured which may explain why it was resting on the wall. Non-commercial, educational purpose photos/camera video clips. http://www.zoology-quest.net/wiki/images/animalia/arthropoda/hexapoda/insecta/pterygota/neoptera/lepidoptera/zygaenoidea/megalopygidae/megalopyge/megalopyge_opercilaris/ and/or, http://www.zoology-quest.net/wiki/index.php/Megalopyge%20opercilaris An expert identified the species: Thank you for visiting our web site at Jefferson Davis College in Brewton, Alabama. What you see on the web pages is the result of many years of photographing, identifying, and writing the history of plants in the Coastal region. Please visit us again and take a few minutes to look at the entire site: http://wildflowers.jdcc.edu/ The moth you photographed is the Southern Flannel Moth, Megalopyge opercularis, in the family Megalopygidae. The moth is fairly widespread, rarely seen, but not rare. This brings up a question that I must ask in what state, county, or parish did you find it? I would be grateful if you would tell me so I could track it. Depending on wind currents, the moth has been sighted as far as Maryland, but we suspect it has spread beyond on the east coast. Thank you, Darryl N. Searcy, Ph.D ----------------------------- Kingdom Animalia Phylum Arthropoda Subphylum Hexapoda Class Insecta Subclass Pterygota Infraclass Neoptera Order Lepidoptera -- butterflies, moths Superfamily Zygaenoidea Family Megalopygidae -- flannel moths Genus Megalopyge Hübner, 1820 Species Megalopyge opercilaris (J. E. Smith) -- puss caterpillar, Southern flannel moth http://www.itis.gov/servlet/SingleRpt/SingleRpt?search_topic=TSN&search_value=117630 According to Dr. Searcy, this moth has two _valid_ classifications under Megalopyge opercilaris (caterpillar stage) and or, Megalopyge opercularis (moth stage).
