- description: *NOTE* i do not use this method with horses who stop out of badness or habit, murphy is NOT a stopper and only ever stops when he is genuinely terrified of something, winding himself up more and more the more i try to fight with him. do NOT apply this to your stopping horse as you will most likely just teach them that if they stop you get off and feed them lol. i put this up for people who are trying to build YOUNG horse's confidence with ver scary fences to show how I desensitise him. it will not apply to all horses, but is the way I've found suits him best as he doesn't respond to being 'told' what to do. Most of you know, Murphy is usually a very brave jumper and will jump anything (watch my xc videos!) but this is what he used to be like with ANY jump. When he's had a break from being ridden he always comes in very green and spooky for a few weeks and to school him I usually try to find some small but scary jumps so I can build his confidence up again! I took the opportunity today to film the technique I've always used to build his confidence with jumping scary things, I find that once he trusts me like this he then will jump most things without stopping! I work by giving him tonnes of praise if he makes even the smallest step towards the scary object. This means that he eventually starts wanting to please me by going closer and eventually jumping it! This is for genuine fear of an object, not for just misbehaving and refusing to jump out of badness, getting off would be a bad idea if you're horse was doing that. But in this case I knew he was genuinely scared, not trying to be bad. The footage actually lasted about 45 minutes so obviously a lot is cut out for the sake of time! There was a lot more standing about than is shown so if you're doing this don't feel like it's going to happen right away! My camera cut off just after he finally jumped it (memory ran out) so it's lucky i got it at all! As soon as he jumped it I gave him loads of praise and got right off, unsaddled him and let him have a bucket of meal and a nice roll! I wanted to show that a bit of patience and asking nicely can go a long way rather than beating young horses into doing what we want! This was an extreme case for Murph, usually the first stage of walking him up to it and letting him look works for him but he was really not wanting to do it today!
