TV Show "Changed My Life": Bright Future For Undateable Steve From Sunderland Sunderland TV star Steve Carruthers has told Sky Tyne and Wear that appearing on hit Channel 4 TV show the Undateables was the best decision he ever made. he 30-year-old from Sunderland, who suffers from a genetic disorder which causes facial disfigurement, says the show has given him a much-needed confidence boost. He said: "Because of the show I've got my confidence back. I had become a negative person and I think that was putting off potential dates. "I feel much better now. I've had loads of people get in touch after the programme. Things are going really well and I couldn't be happier." Steve felt his looks were stopping him getting a date, and inspired by his parents' loving relationship - his mum suffers from the same genetic disorder - joined the show hoping to fing love. During the programme, Steve went on a date to Nancy's Bordello in Newcastle with 19-year-old Ellie Graham who works in Starbucks in Sunderland. Steve said: "Ellie is an absolutely amazing girl, really caring. Unfortunately things didn't work out between us but it's been for the best. "She called me to say she had thought about it and we should be friends, and I still talk to her and am planning to see her again." Steve was born with Crouzon's syndrome which is related to a sleep disorder - sleep apnoea - which causes him to stop breathing while alseep. His brother Mark and sister Amanda both died from the condition in their early twenties, which contributed to Steve's negative outlook on life. "It is a really hard thing to go through. They died within a year of each other. I think that's the main reason my confidence was so low. "Neither of them knew they had it but I'm receiving treatment. I use a machine on a night time to keep me breathing, but it doesn't stop me getting out or doing anything." Steve's sister Amanda left behind two children when she passed away, a 13-year-old girl and a 12-year-old son with autism. The two children were adopted by Steve's parents and the family all live together in Ryhope in Sunderland. Steve said: "Thanks to the show I'm like I was before my brother and sister died. My mum and dad and my friends have all noticed it. "For me personally it's the best thing I have every done and I'm so grateful for it." Steve's now got over 2000 followers on Twitter and has had offers from interested suitors on Facebook. He is the new frontman of charity Changing Faces and hopes to carry on raising awareness of both Crouzon's and sleep apnoea. Series 2 of The Undateables continues throughout February 2013 and episodes are available for a limited period on 4 On Demand.
