David Pogue presents this new episode of Nova ScienceNow, the family-friendly American science magazine show, exploring how dogs, pigeons, and bees interpret the world. The show begins with a look at moral recognition. Any dog owner will be familiar with their pet's guilty expression after it has misbehaved, but what is man's best friend really thinking? Scientists studying animal cognition are finally revealing the machinery of animals' ethical compasses. This is followed by a study of the behaviour of bees. Individually, these insects are not particularly intelligent, but when they act collectively they are capable of remarkable things. Recent discoveries suggest that the pattern of communication within a giant bee colony is remarkably similar to the neural networks within the human brain. Moving on, the show analyses the mental processes of the homing pigeon. These birds can find their way back to their lofts over hundreds of miles of unfamiliar terrain, but how do they do it? Finally, the show profiles Yale scientist Laurie Santos. On the island of Cayo Santiago, off the coast of Puerto Rico, Laurie is studying a unique community of over 900 rhesus monkeys, whose social structure bears some remarkable resemblances to our own.
