- description: In what has quickly become a tradition, Julie Bishop was mobbed by students outraged at the Liberal assault on higher education. In one of the angriest student protests seen on campus for some time, around 200 students besieged Julie Bishop and demanded she leave the campus, facing down heavy-handed security guards and police. The impromptu rally was addressed by Ridah Hassan, Education Officer at the Sydney University Student Representative Council: "Quality and affordable education should be a right for all, not a privilege for the super-wealthy", said Ridah Hassan, Education Officer at the Sydney University Student Representative council. "We're not going to let a bunch of rich politicians who get six figure salaries and pensions funded by taxpayers tell us there's no money in the budget for education or healthcare. It's a lie, their priorities are all wrong." "This budget reflects a callous disregard for the lives of students, of workers, of the poor, said Chloe Rafferty, NSW Education Officer for the National Union of Students. We will not allow these criminals to speak on our universities without facing protests, occupations, and disruption." Before the rally ended, students vowed to return in bigger numbers on Wednesday May 21st for the national day of action to defend education against fee deregulation. Next Wednesday, Sydney University students will meeting at Fisher Library at 1.30pm for a rally on campus, before marching to UTS to join students from around the state, as well striking NTEU staff.
