  • description: That's barking! Outrage after zoo in China keeps a husky in the same enclosure as wolves to 'add entertainment value' Video showing the dog limping among pack of wolves became popular It prompted an outpouring of fury from people who condemned the zoo Management said they kept the two species together for 'entertainment' Animal groups have voiced concerns over the zoo's treatment of the husky Animal lovers in China have questioned the management of a public zoo after a husky had been kept alongside a pack of wolves. Concerns were expressed after a video, taken by a tourist, showed the dog limping inside the wolf enclosure at the Dezhou Zoo in Shandong Province, eastern China. The zoo said in a statement yesterday that they had deliberately kept the two species together to 'add entertainment value', reported Huanqiu.com, an affiliation to People's Daily. The husky was spotted in a video taken by a tourist during his trip to the zoo last week. The tourist, known by his screen name of 'Yuan Shengpen bless', posted the video on his Weibo account on November 7. The man, surnamed Yuan, told MailOnline that he was concerned over the way the zoo was run. He said: 'The husky won't get bullied if it is kept with a pack of wolves, however it will surely feel very lonely.' He explained that he went to the zoo with his girlfriend and saw the animal roaming inside the wolf enclosure with a pack of wolves. He added that the animal was wounded as one of its paws had been bitten. The man said in his post: 'As we all know, wolves like living with each other and have a strong sense of territory. 'Don't you think it would be miserable for the dog to live there?' The man's post drew the attention from many Weibo users who condemned the zoo for being irresponsible. A user called 'tu jiang jiang y' said: 'This is too cruel. [How dare they] mix a dog with wolves and it was injured. Who can give it some help?' 'RAINYBLUES' commented: 'It will starve to death if no action is taken. Huskies are known to have a gentle temperament and no sense of attacking. How [can it] obtain food from a pack of wolves?' A third user 'Mu Xiyan Crystal' added: '[Managers of] zoos and aquariums need to be more cautious, just like that shopping mall that keeps a polar bear. Otherwise, [they are] abusing animals and taking rights away from them.' The user continued: 'If they can't even differentiate dogs from wolves, I worry about the other animals' treatment.' Dezhou Zoo released a statement yesterday after the video became viral in China. In the statement, the zoo acknowledged that there was a husky living in the wolf enclosure. The dog has been kept there deliberately to 'increase the level of appreciation as well as the entertainment values for visitors'. The husky was introduced into the zoo about two months ago, together with the wolves. The management also said the dog and the wolves had co-inhabited peacefully. They went further to explain that the animal should be safe in the enclosure as huskies 'enjoy certain status among the wolf family'. The zoo confirmed that the husky had been wounded and they had sent it to the vet for treatment. Animal welfare groups have voiced concerns over the zoo's treatment of the husky. Asian Animal Foundation wrote on Weibo yesterday: 'The primary responsibility of a zoo is to educate. To spread such a wrong idea is misleading. '[We] suggest relevant departments tighten the assessments of the qualification of zoos and to evaluate the welfare of the animals.' Elisa Allen, director of PETA UK, told MailOnline: 'This dog clearly needs urgent veterinary attention and belongs in a loving home, not in a zoo to be exploited for the paying public.' Ms Allen added: 'The predatory instincts of wolves don't simply vanish in captivity, and a limping domesticated dog thrown into their enclosure may well end up on the receiving end of aggression.' PETA UK also said that its Asian office would be in contact with the zoo in regards to the husky's welfare.
