Inter 3-2 Bologna AET: Dramatic Ranocchia header sends Nerazzurri into the semi-final Inter defeated Bologna 3-2 after extra time at the Stadio Meazza in the Coppa Italia quarter-final on Tuesday evening. Fredy Guarin scored with a rasping shot from just inside the penalty area, before another long ranger, this time from Rodrigo Palacio, saw the Nerazzurri take a two-goal lead. But Alessandro Diamanti's late freekick gave the visitors hope and Manolo Gabbiadini levelled the score. But Andrea Ranocchia leapt above the Bologna defence to give Inter the win after extra time. Antonio Cassano had the first clear opportunity as he took the ball past Antonsson, but he couldn't striker the ball cleanly and his shot dribbled wide. Matias Silvestre and Alessandro Diamanti went close for their respective sides, before Cristian Pasquato forced a good save from Samir Handanovic. As the half wore on the Rossoblu edged their way into the game, but the home side still looked the more dangerous. A curling striker from Cassano was tipped round the top corner by Federico Agliardi. But Inter soon broke the deadlock. Guarin then skipped past a couple of Bologna defenders before firing the ball into the top corner past a helpless Agliardi. However, Inter were kept on their toes as Handanovic produced a fantastic save to deny Alberto Gilardino, whose header looked to the sneaking into goal. In the second period, Inter looked to play more on the counter attack allowing Bologna more of the ball. Pereira got in behind the away side's defence but good goalkeeping from Agliardi denied the full-back. Cassano was presented with a glorious opportunity as he was played through on goal, but his poor shot was fired wide. Another golden opportunity was wasted as Cassano, Rodrigo Palacio and Guarin passed the ball along the edge of the area with no one making a attempt to test the Bologna goalkeeper. But not long after Palacio gave Agliardi no chance as his curling shot from just outside the area seemed to have wrapped up Inter's passage into the semi-final. However, Alessandro Diamanti wasn't quite ready to give up as his freekick skimmed the underside of the crossbar as it nestled in the top corner to give his side a lifeline. They almost had an equaliser as Andrea Ranocchia headed onto his own post, but the leveller did come soon after as Gabbiadini poked home from close range following a lovely Marco Motta cross. Ranocchia did have the ball in the back of the net but his goal was ruled out as there was a foul in the build up. Gabbiadini forced Handanovic into a flying save in stoppage time, then Palacio's deflected shot was tipped over the bar. With the scores level, extra-time was then a must. Esteban Cambiasso had a brilliant opportunity in the opening moments of extra-time. After some good interplay on the edge of the area his shot was scuffed wide. The best opportunity of extra-time fell to Javier Zanetti whose driving run saw him dart into the Bologna penalty area and with the goal gaping, he proceeded to clip the outside of the post. Then dramatically Ranocchia headed home in the final minute of the game from a Guarin corner.
