  • description: LA JOLLA - December 30, 2012 00:00 - CONTACT #1: LETS TALK Using the Find My iPhone service, we tracked down my friends iPhone. After passing the suspect several times to confirm the GPS was correct and we were not mistaken, we pulled over to talk to the suspect on the sidewalk. He instead darted across the street and hid inside a university campus. At this point we called the police with a description for a BOL. 00:55 - CONTACT #2: FOOT PURSUIT After losing him in the campus, we refreshed the Find My iPhone screen and saw the iPhone was now over a mile away. We continued on, to spot him at a park. My friend attempted to chase the suspect while I drove around to cut him off, but he fled on his bike again. He hid in a hotel complex while we called the police again, waiting for it to move. 03:43 - CONTACT #3: THE TAKEDOWN At this point we realized he was continuing north along the beach, and that his only way out wasn't until reaching the Torrey Pines State Reserve parking lot. We decided to call the police again to meet us there and cut the suspect off when he arrived. Unfortunately he arrived before police and swung on my friend. He was arrested and we were both let go. We overheard that he had 2 outstanding warrants for his arrest. We got the iPhone back and took a wanted criminal off the streets. Moral of the story? Don't steal iPhones. This is like the guy who used a dating site and posed as a woman to get his iPhone back, except we used realtime GPS tracking. SanDiegoNewsVideo.com
