The challenger sank to his knees in despair upon hearing the decision before St-Pierre made his emotional announcement. 'I have a bunch of stuff in my life happening,' he said. 'I need to hang up my gloves. It's very emotional. I have to go away for a little bit.' Hendricks, meanwhile was clearly upset by the decision. 'I thought I clearly won the fight,' he said. 'Georges was a great competitor. I'm coming back. I'll get that belt. It's mine. 'I just earned that belt but it was taken away from me. I swear to God that won't happen again.' St-Pierre slipped an early left hand from Hendricks and took him down, failing twice to lock in the guillotine choke. But Hendricks began to land with the elbows, chipping away at the champion who was cut above the right eye. Both men connected with knees to the thighs but it was Hendricks who was landing the cleaner blows. St-Pierre surpassed the record for time spent in the Octagon in the first round but he was rocked in the first minute of the second by a left uppercut. But having weathered a particularly heavy storm, the champion retired fire with fire as both hands began to find their target. Hendricks continued to hold his lethal left hand cocked but by the end of the second five-minute period, his primary weapon had been neutralised somewhat.
