On December 24th, 2011, Nick was diagnosed at 18 years old with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Before that he was an average teenager who enjoyed playing the bass guitar and jammin with his friends. The chemotherapy was going to be 25 month cycle. In feb Nick became an outpatient at Macmaster children's hospital. Every Thursday he needed to go back to the hospital for his chemo. During that time he was homeschooled by his friend Ryan Guay. Both him and Ryan shared the love of writing and playing music. In March 2012 Nick, Ryan and Nick's friends Carlos Lopez and Isaac Thomson were jammin in Isaac's basement when they wrote the song "Don't Eat Your Young". Then on July 10, 2012 Nick became very sick with a severe blood infection. Because he was immune suppressed from chemotherapy the infection quickly turned to severe septic shock. The infection caused bloodclots throughout his body. Life threatening ones in his heart, lung and brain. Nicky's organs shut down. He was put in an induced coma and filled with fluids to preserve his vital organs. This compromised the circulation in his hands and feet. They turned black. On August 23 he had a life saving surgery. Both hands were amputated below the elbow. Both feet below the knees. A week after that surgery it was discovered he had developed a brain aneurysm as a result of the infection and suffered 2 small strokes. On September 20th he had another surgery to repair the aneurysm. Nick in the meantime has made leaps and bounds in the recovery process. He was discharged fom ICU in October and November 1st, he was transferred to Hamilton rehab centre to learn how to walk again on prosthetic legs and use prosthetic hands all while finishing his last year of chemotherapy. Nick is without hands and feet but his spirit is still as strong as ever. He plans to go back to school at get his masters in social work so he can help other kids going through illness. Nick deserves to fulfill all his goals and dreams. He wants to one day play the bass guitar again. He needs the best prosthetics to accomplish this.
