According to Taiwan's Coast Guard, some Taiwanese fishing boats entered the waters near the islands a little after 8 AM on Tuesday. They are among about 60 fishing boats that reportedly left Taiwan on Monday to protest Japan's nationalization of some of the Senkaku islands earlier this month. The Senkaku Islands are claimed by China and Taiwan. The vessels belong to a fishing cooperative in Taiwan's northeastern county of Yilan. The cooperative says it has received information that most of the fishing boats arrived at an area about 10 kilometers from the islands as of 9 AM Japan time. The cooperative maintains that the waters surrounding the islands have long been a major fishing ground for Taiwanese fishermen. A Taiwanese TV reporter on board one of the boats reported that Japanese patrol boats warned them in Chinese to leave the Japanese waters using microphones and electric sign boards. The Taiwanese patrol boats responded that the waters are their territory. The reporter also reported that both sides were using water cannons against each other. More than 10 Taiwanese Coast Guard vessels are on hand to monitor the fishing fleet's activities. Sep. 25, 2012 - Updated 02:02 UTC (11:02 JST)
