Ophelia has picked up speed and is moving east north east across the Atlantic and through the Azores. The UK is warned to brace for toppling trees, travel chaos and the risk of injury from flying debris. The NOAA released its latest update at 2pm, it read: "Ophelia's eye has become cloud filled during the past several hours, and an 0330 UTC GCOM microwave pass indicated that the hurricane only had about half an eyewall, with nearly all of the deep convection located over the eastern part of the circulation." The NOAA's 5am update said: "Remarkably, the hurricane has continued to strengthen this evening. Satellite images indicate that cloud tops in the eyewall have cooled in the past several hours, with a warm eye remaining." A rare and noxious combination of meteorological factors will ensure the churning cyclone – feared to be the worst for a decade – will not weaken before it hits the UK. Instead Ophelia is poised to scour huge swathes of the country while remaining as close as is possible to a fully-formed hurricane.
