  • description: IT took "a little bit of Patrick Swayze and a lot of Matt Skuse" to wow the judges and have the packed Ilminster gym crowd on their feet at the 2012 Dancing with the Stars Gizzy Style competition on Saturday night. Gisborne's Mr Hockey paired up with salsa teacher Sheryl May to score a perfect 10 across the board on technical ability and land top spot overall, with big marks on their stage presence. They performed a rendition of the famous last scene from the 1987 blockbuster Dirty Dancing to draw the curtain on the hockey fundraising event. Yes, it even had "the lift". The act wrapped things up perfectly, said 2010 winner Bevan Chapman, who sat on the judging panel with seasoned dance stars Hayley Holt and Jonny Williams. Taking a "dance first . . . think later" approach to the stage worked wonders for IT businessman and hockey publicity officer Tony Scragg. He and partner Anna Beattie finished just three points behind in second place. Their Freddie Mercury tribute got the loudest cheer of the night. Poverty Bay under-13 boys hockey coach Dougal Watts and his pre-show mystery partner Amber Church completed the top three. The big winner on the night was Poverty Bay hockey, who put on a "fantastic show and raised funds for their new artificial turf project", said MC Scott McSloy. More than 800 people packed the gym hall for the event, which raised around $20,000 for the artificial turf project. Ten pairs took the stage and were first adjudicated on their technical ability, with the three judges handing marks out of 10. Extra marks were given for stage presence and tallied up at the end of the night. The Herald will feature two pairs every day this week in their running order, including a rundown of the act, the judges' reaction to their performance and their technical ability scores. http://www.gisborneherald.co.nz/article/?type=article&id=28594
