- description: Weight-lifters and fitness fanatics train in Kiev's Hydropark, which attracts a clientele from across the city to train free-of-charge alongside the banks of the Dnieper River. In-fitting with their free work-out, some even take a dip in the Dnieper to cool down after an intense work-out. The facility encompasses ten square miles on Tuhev island and features more than 200 weight-lifting stations, some of which are made in classical ways - others an impromptu mish-mash of scrap metal. It was created in the early 1970s by a group of healthy lifestyle activists including Polish gymnast Kasimir Jagesky and Yuri Kuk, a cybernetics engineer. Kuk originally took a piece of anchor chain from a ship rotting nearby and began to use it as a barbell chain. The other original equipment in the gym was constructed of wood before being replaced by iron, which people brought from all over the city in the Soviet era in order to build the gym. A security guard named Petya lives in a small tent nearby and ensures the safety of the gym, where people come train at all hours and in all weather conditions. The gym is especially attractive to would-be exercisers unable to afford membership fees at other fitness centres.
