Thomas Briels put Belgium ahead after six minutes, a delicate lob over Devon Manchester from John-John Dohmens' pass. Blair Hilton equalised for the Black Sticks with a great touch off Alex Shaw's slapped pass. Tom Boon should have put Belgium ahead. Emmanuel Stockbroekx perfect ball into the D found Boon at the far post unmarked, but he somehow missed from a yard out. Boon made amends for that miss from a short corner. A perfect drag flick flew into the roof of the net to put Belgium out in front. It was 3-1 early in the second half. Loick Lupaerts' route one ball was dispatched by Boon for his second of the match. Andy Hayward made it a one goal game with a low drag flick into the goal from a short corner. Hayward was inches away from an equaliser. Vincent Vanash made a spectacular save off a short corner that maintained the slender Belgian lead.
