The accident occurred around 07.30 h. The driver, a 56 year old man, was driving on the bypass of the Grevelingendam from the direction Bruinisse. The bridge was opened and was being closed at that moment. The moving part of the bridge was only 4 meters away from closing when the man drove under the barrier and hit the water. Eventually the driver wasn’t hurt and climbed out of his vehicle. When he wanted to jump on a concrete edge to bring himself to safety, he fell on the concrete and back into the water. Due to the fall the man broke several ribs. One of them punctured his lung. The man was taken to the hospital with an ambulance. He got help from the captain of a passing ship. The victim was brought on board. The police started a investigation. The car was brought back up by a mobile crane. The bypass has been closed for all traffic for several hours.
