  • description: In the final game of Day 1 of the Men's Hockey World League, the hosts the Netherlands welcomed a New Zealand side looking to upset the odds against the home side. In a frenetic game with huge drama, neither side could find a winner as the game ended 3-3. The fixture got off to a cagey start with neither side making any clear cut chances within the first twenty minutes, but exploded into life with sixteen minutes remaining in the half. Robert Hofman showed skill and pace to break down field, leaving defenders in his wake before Valentin Vega's reverse cross caused chaos in the New Zealand area. Dean Couzins was alleged to have played the ball above shoulder height and the home team were awarded a much disputed penalty corner. Jeroen Hertzberger slammed home past the helpless Hamish McGregor and the Dutch went 1-0 ahead. Yet their lead was short-lived as Phil Burrows fired the ball into the Netherlands area and Hugo Inglis reacted quickly to deflect the ball into the roof of the net and level the score at 1-1. Burrows and Inglis combined again to give the Black Sticks the lead going into the break. New Zealand, awarded a foul outside the area, took the free hit through Burrows. His powerful drive was touched one by Inglis past the outstretched Jaap Stockmann to make it 2-1 to New Zealand. The second half saw McGregor tested early on with Sander Baart forcing him into a save from a well-worked penalty corner. New Zealand's resilience paid off when Shay Neal snuck round the back of the Dutch defence to tee up Jacob Smith who tapped in past the stranded Stockmann to take the score to 3-1. However, the Dutch always looked dangerous in attack and buoyed by the vocal home support they turned the game on its head. Hertzberger, who had impressed all game, struck with vemon from a penalty corner to make it 3-2 and claim his second goal of the game. With less than quarter of an hour to go, Oliver Polkamp stormed into the New Zealand area and his pull back provoked a goalmouth scramble. Eventually turned in by Valentin Verga, the score read 3-3 and the Dutch were on level terms. Ultimately it ended 3-3, after a superb game for the neutrals, but one which both sides will be disappointed not to have won.
