  • description: UPDATE 1: Daniel (the victim) was taken by the police, and released. Calgary Police have stated no charges are being laid against him. Hopefully that information will be sufficient to make some of the pro-security commenters pause for thought. Daniel's only 'mistake' was to be less than respectful when speaking to security when he was first stopped in the mall. UPDATE 2: I have set comments to approved only. If you feel like speculating on whether this guy deserved a beating or not, feel free to do so with your friends or elsewhere on the internet. I was of the opinion at the time that the level of aggression by the security guards was excessive, and as further facts come to light that opinion is only strengthened. UPDATE 3: I've removed the comments made by MyMrno1 (http://www.youtube.com/user/MyMrno1) - they were purely inflammatory and classic internet trolling. Not needed, and all he proved to be was a distraction from a serious situation. UPDATE 4: A second video taken from another angle was taken by another eyewitness - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yi80a5tIO5M I unfortunately did not catch this on video from the beginning, but a woman stopped in an SUV stated the young man being assaulted by mall security had nothing in his hands when he was taken down, and was not being aggressive. An important note: The security guard who attempts a few times to block me from taking video had to shoo away THREE other security guards who attempted to join in the fun of kicking and punching the young man already restrained on the ground. I was asked twice to stop filming, and I politely and flatly replied "No." I'm fortunate they didn't try to push that issue. When Calgary Police arrived on scene about 5 minutes later and were shown the video, I can't say i was thrilled with their response. The young man had apparently had a pair of scissors in one of his pockets, and the officer felt that was plenty of justification for the amount of force used. He asked me if I felt someone could do me grievous harm with them, or if I thought someone could kill me with them. Well, of course someone could. It's not the first thing that leaps to mind when I see a pair of scissors though. And honestly, I have to think the officer doesn't actually know how hard it is to stab someone with an actual sharpened knife, never mind a flimsy pair of scissors. It takes a shocking amount of force to actually stab someone. I'm not sure what powers security guards are granted, but if they're allowed to subdue 'suspects' like this, I'm a lot more afraid for our society than I was before tonight. I accept that police officers are allowed to use force, and do my best to trust that they're properly trained in it's use. I don't believe for a second that a mall security guard is out to do anything more than find an excuse to use their mall cop gear to protect the corporate interests and satisfy their urge to put someone 'in their place'. From the Alberta Government, Alberta Solicitor General and Ministry of Public Security "Alberta Basic Security Training" manual: The most important rule about the use of force in your role as a security professional is to avoid it as much as possible. It cannot be stated often enough: as a security professional, you have no more or no fewer rights than any other citizen.
