  • description: For those of you that aren't aware yet Netflix recently picked up the first two seasons of Matt's "Rebel Without a Kitchen" show. In this video he watches the fourth episode giving us the inside scoop on the filming as it's happening and even makes a surprise call to his mom. In 2014 Chef Matt Basile had a vision for a show that focused on the growing street food movement and Rebel Without a Kitchen became that show. The show was originally featured on the Cooking Channel and after several successful seasons Matt decided to take his culinary craft in a slightly different direction. With his intrepid team by his side Matt traveled to a wide variety of locations cooking and tasting his way across the nation. According to Matt Episode 4 was quite possibly the most important episode of the entire series as it was the episode they launched the food truck. He recalls being petrified about the launch, so nervous in fact that he slept in the kitchen that night. The episode opens up with Matt doing a final walk-around the freshly painted truck and he notes that his Dad actually designed the graphics on the food truck. They are nothing short of bright, eye-catching, and dynamic. The perfect mix of color and branding for a food truck. The next scene we see is one of Matt having chicken cutlets with his mom. Matt says that back in the day his mom was quite the cook. Now that she's older she doesn't cook as much, she has also become gluten free and is also now vegetarian. As you can imagine, Matt feels like she has really deflated the cooking fun balloon. The producer poses a question to him as the scene is playing asking who is the better cook, him or his mom. Matt emphatically states without even a flicker of doubt in his eyes that he is a much better cook than his mom. The producer probes further asking what he thinks she would say. Matt thinks she would have to agree with him now, but perhaps back in the day not so much. Ky, the producer, challenges him even further resulting in Matt calling his mother to personally ask her. As expected she agrees that he is the better cook and then, as most mothers do, proceeds to talk his arm off. Which includes a scathing review of a shrimp dish which seems to have come from The Lisa Marie claiming that it was unbelievably salty. She follows that up by saying that she gave it Matt's dad who will "eat anything" according to his mom. About 45 minutes later Matt finally gets his mom off the phone and returns to the episode recounting moments later how much he loves her even though she makes him crazy. I think that's a statement many of us can relate to. The next scene Matt focuses on shows him burning up inside the food truck as he cooks away for an impressively long line. The stress of the event is ever-present on his face in the footage but Matt and his team held strong and delivered what they promised they could. Revisiting the scene actually moves Matt to tears as he considers all the effort that went into the launch of the truck and the food brand, and all the sacrifices made on his part, as well as the people helping him along the way. You would be hard pressed to find anyone as dedicated to their dreams as Matt Basile. Matt says he's learned a lot over the years and it's clear from the video that the food truck experience played a pivotal role. As always thank you for watching.
