- description: A little information to assist with this clip. - Timing = 16secs & 11 frames from strike to sounds of thunder - Temp was approximately 28 deg Celsius = @ 347.79m/s for sound delay. - Lightning distance calculated at approx = 5.721km - Estimated Distance (Plane to Camera) = 4.7km - Estimated Distance (Plane to Strike) = 1.021kms (Scientists may now have their say to see if I am even remotely close) Being in the plane would have been terrifying, even though aircraft are designed to take direct hits. I'm certain everyone who has flown through a thunderstorm appreciates "fair weather" when it comes to take-off and landings. Were the passengers at risk.. I very much doubt it.. Would they be happy to be on the ground, absolutely. Lastly, as a technical note, the blue fringing you might see around the planes body when the strike hit, is not electrical activity. It's a lens effect called Chromatic Aberration. A Canon KJ22ex7.6 series broadcast TV lens captured the incident using its in built doubler. At full zoom its 336mm using a Sony 2/3" broadcast camera. "CA" is expected in these lenses at those focal lengths. Based on this very long focal length, the bolt will appear extremely close to the aircraft, however 1km distance from the plane would be more likely based on the storm cell intensity and playback of the footage. Regardless of the technical information, the frame grab taken is precisely what was captured. Photographically speaking, for a video still it does look terrifying. Always enjoy your constructive comments, without the trolling of course. I would have at least thought some would appreciate the steady zooming and panning. I guess mobile phone videos are more popular than broadcast vision. Next time, I'll be sure to film this vertically and scream alot. ============================================== Video available for licensing.
