- description: The president, as you well know by now, has imposed a ban on Muslims entering the United States. Such an outlandish policy has prompted Trump’s backers to resort to even more outlandish methods of defending why they’ve placed themselves in Trump’s camp. On that note, CNN‘s Poppy Harlow hosted on her show this Saturday Trump adviser and former U.S. Representative Jack Kingston, who supports Trump — and his Muslim ban. Harlow asked Kingston, basically, to defend to her, and to the audience watching at home, the immigration ban that amounts to a likely illegal religious test over who’s allowed into the United States and who’s not. Kingston couldn’t do it, instead resorting to lies that prompted Harlow to immediately shut him down, live on-air, for the sake of not allowing his lying to go unchecked. She initially asked him, quite simply, “What data can you point to that justifies that these seven nations have a tie to U.S. terror attacks or a higher incidence of bringing terror to this country?” Kingston began to babble on and on, initially deflecting from the proposed question, instead suggesting that the ban is justified because the nations that are targeted “don’t really have a standard that would preclude enemies of the United States from emigrating here.” Such a statement is not data, as Harlow asked Kingston for. It’s pure, racist conjecture. So she went on, pointing out that under Kingston’s logic, nations such as Russia should be placed under the same immigration ban that’s been placed on nations including Iraq and Sudan, among others. Kingston’s answer is legitimately difficult to follow, not at all in the same way as Trump’s statements are intentionally difficult to follow right off the bat. Trump’s winning strategy is to use “alternative facts,” while Kingston, and undoubtedly others who are ideologically aligned with him, simply don’t have any idea what they’re talking about. Harlow wasn’t interested in putting up with Kingston’s rambling, however, asking him, “Congressman, can you point to a single terrorist attack in this country that was carried out by a Syrian refugee?” He replied by citing the relatively recent terror incidents in San Bernardino, California, Orlando, Florida, and Fort Hood, Texas. However, as Harlow pointed out — none of the attackers behind the incidents that Kingston mentioned were refugees such as have been targeted by Trump’s immigration ban. She cut in while he was talking in order to point that out, saying that she wanted to “correct this for our viewers,” since what Kingston was saying was “something that is not factual.”
