- description: Imagine having to scale a cliff every time you want to get somewhere. That's what the Yu family, from a remote village in central China, has to do each day. To get anywhere, they have to maneuver up and down these steep, slippery 65 foot ladders placed against the side of a cliff. It's also the only way for the kids to get to school. It's a difficult climb, at the best of times. When it rains, things get slippery. Several days ago, the daughter in the family fell. Luckily, her mom was able to catch her. [Li Wei, Teacher on Home Visit] "It makes my legs shiver. I dared not look down when I was climbing up the steps just now because I felt frightened." Not everyone can make the long, treacherous journey. Grandma Yu says she hasn't been out of the mountains since 1989. But despite being so isolated, Mr. Yu says they get to enjoy plenty of what life has to offer. [Yu Youquan, Zhangjiawan Villager] "We have clean air and water here. We can make a living by collecting the green leaves." Those green leaves are sold for making Chinese glutinous rice dumplings. For the younger generation, it would be nice to, one day, have a different way to get around. 14-year old Yu Qinyun says he wants to study hard and earn enough money to build a road for the villagers.
