- description: A 34-year-old Brampton man is charged with impaired driving after a dump truck hit scaffolding on the Burlington Skyway Thursday afternoon. The crash has closed the eastbound lanes for an undetermined length of time as Ministry of Transportation structural engineers determine the structural integrity of the bridge. The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. when a dump truck with a raised box "struck the Burlington Bay Skyway while travelling the Toronto-bound lanes," the MTO said. "So the bridge strike caused some damage to the overhead truss and scaffolding fell and it hit another truck," MTO spokesman Astrid Poei said. The construction zone was set up for the ministry to conduct maintenance on the highway. "However, no workers were near the bridge strike," Poei said. The OPP said a transport truck and two other cars received significant damage in the crash. Traffic was diverted to Eastport Dr. while the ministry worked on the scene. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt warned drivers to "stay away from the area" and find another way through Hamilton, Ont. Sukhvinder Singh Rai is charged with impaired driving and exceed 80 milligrams. His licence was automatically suspended for 90 days. He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in a Hamilton courtroom Aug. 22. The driver of a large truck that crashed into and damaged the Burlington Skyway — putting a cloud over Toronto-bound traffic ahead of the busy August holiday weekend — has been charged with two impaired driving related offences, according to the Ontario Provincial Police. Sukhvinder Singh Rai, a 34-year-old Brampton man who was arrested at the scene and taken to the Burlington OPP detachment for breath tests, faces one count of impaired operation of a motor vehicle and one count of blood alcohol level exceeding 80 milligrams while operating a motor vehicle. As a result of the charges, Rai's licence has been suspended for 90 days, and he is scheduled to appear in a Hamilton court on Aug. 22, police said. He has since been released from custody. The Toronto-bound lanes of the bridge remained closed Thursday night, and will be for “some time," police said, after it was damaged when the truck hit the superstructure that afternoon Burlington Skyway Bridge Traffic Report, Skyway Bridge. hamilton skyway bridge burlington truck crashes into bridge Skyway Bridge james n. allan skyway Skyway Bridge toronto bound lanes Burlington Hamilton Ontario spencer smith park Queen Elizabeth Way burlington skyway Hamilton burlington bay Ontario skyway bridge Cannon Street storm clouds lake ontario Downtown Steel Town Bay Street burlington Closure Traffic Road Trip time lapse Canada QEW hamilton Accident July 31 Driving Awesome Damaged Ipod 4 Police Ships Video Crash 2014
