John Laurinaitis defeated John Cena at Over The Limit on Sunday night to save his job as general manager of Raw and SmackDown. I feel the urge to type that sentence again, or at least part of it: John Laurinaitis defeated John Cena in a wrestling match. Just three weeks ago, WWE couldn't bring itself to have Brock Lesnar pin Cena in his first WWE match in eight years. But when Johnny Ace gets thrown in the mix, the game gets changed. The recently fired Big Show returned after Laurinaitis tried to escape through the crowd, and as it looked like Cena was going to finish the job, the giant seven-foot athlete turned on the face of the WWE allowing for the upset. Considering that Laurinaitis was battling for his job, this outcome is not as big of a surprise as you might think. It is obvious that WWE loves the Laurinaitis character far more than anyone watching Raw and SmackDown. Perhaps WWE is really trying to set Laurinaitis up as the "new" Vince McMahon for this generation. Sadly, Laurinaitis does not have nearly enough charisma or personality on his own to match what McMahon does. Cena was put in a no-win situation with this match. He was coming off one of the most high profile matches of the year against Lesnar at Extreme Rules. When it became clear that WWE had no direction for him after that match, Laurinaitis was given the spot. This was a rushed angle that could have been built up over months to give the match more impact, but WWE decided to go for the quick story and shock-value upset at this pay-per-view. Once again, just to make sure you know I am not joking: John Laurinaitis defeated John Cena in a wrestling match. The world truly has been turned upside-down.
