911 Dispatcher Caught Snoring on the Job

The Maryland woman, who has not been identified, can be heard trying desperately to rouse the sleeping dispatcher by saying: "Hello, hello? Hello!" on the April 4 call, NBC Washington reports. Eventually the operator who connected the woman to the sleeping dispatcher interrupts the call and tries to reconnect her, thinking there is a problem with the line. But when she is reconnected the woman is again met by snores. Another dispatcher then interrupts the call and tries to help the woman, but because the sleeping operator has not hung up, his snoring can be heard growing louder throughout the call. The dispatcher lets out at least 18 snores before he suddenly wakes up as the woman is explaining that her husband stopped breathing, saying "now he's all blue!" Not realising the woman has been on the call for more than six minutes and is now talking to a different operator, the original dispatcher asks her repeatedly for her address. Eventually the woman bursts into tears in frustration. Montgomery County Assistant Fire Chief Scott Graham said the sleeping dispatcher was an experienced firefighter who was 17 hours into a 24-hour overtime shift. "The employee was immediately removed from the floor by his supervisor that night and placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the inquiry," Mr Graham said. Mr Graham said the woman's husband was taken to hospital without any problems stemming from the delayed call.
