The two-time All-Star guard scored 32 of his career-high 42 points in the second half, including 21 in the fourth quarter, to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 98-91 victory over the 76ers in a matchup of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference. With the league's best record and the recent acquisition of three-time Defensive Player of the Year Dikembe Mutombo, the 76ers (42-16) are the favorite to win the Eastern Conference and reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 1983. But the Bucks, who lead the Central Division with a 35-20 mark and extended their winning streak to five games, may have something to say about that. Lit up for 49 points by Iverson in the first meeting between the teams on February 13 at the Bradley Center, Allen stole the show in Iverson's backyard on Monday, hitting 17-of-23 shots from the field, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range, and added nine rebounds and seven assists. "It was a big step in the direction of us maturing because we knew we had them beat at our place (on February 13)," Allen said. "We came into this game knowing we could score points and intimidate teams, but could we do it against Philadelphia? Tonight we were able to." "I don't think 17-of-23 is something you expect. He was phenomenal," said 76ers coach Larry Brown. "It was a great performance and even with that we had a chance to win." A member of the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic Basketball Team in 2000, Allen was unstoppable in the final five minutes, scoring 14 points on an assortment of 3-pointers, drives to the basket and free throws. Allen also gave Iverson fits on defense this time, effectively using his five-inch height advantage. The 6-foot Iverson, who averaged 40.4 points in Philadelphia's previous seven games, hit just 8-of-27 shots and finished with 26 points. "He (Allen) played a great game tonight," Iverson said. "He shot the ball well. Once you hit some shots like that, you get the momentum. Your confidence builds, then it seems like everything you throw up goes in. He had the momentum, he hit some shots." Mutombo made a strong home debut, finishing with 21 points and 16 rebounds. He totaled 26 points and 22 rebounds in his first two games as a Sixer. Former Buck Tyrone Hill had a season-high 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting and 10 rebounds for Philadelphia. But the night belonged to Allen, who set a First Union Center record for most points in a half and a fourth quarter, often abusing guards Eric Snow and Aaron McKie. His previous career high was 40 points in an April 18, 1998 game against Minnesota. With the score tied at 80-80, Allen drilled a 3-pointer from the right side to give Milwaukee the lead for good with 4:49 remaining. Iverson responded with a step-back 20-foot jumper from the right side, but Allen launched another 3-pointer from the right sideline, giving the Bucks an 86-82 advantage with 4:09 left. After Mutombo was called for offensive interference, Sam Cassell hit a jumper from the free-throw line for Milwaukee. Iverson missed a running seven-footer from the left side and Allen drove by Snow and converted a layup, increasing the lead to 90-82 with 3:09 remaining. Mutombo completed a three-point play to pull Philadelphia within 90-85. After Milwaukee's Glenn Robinson, who finished with 19 points, hit a 10-foot jumper, Iverson converted a pair of free throws to again pull the Sixers within five. Allen came to the rescue again, firing a 20-foot jumper over McKie and hitting a free throw after Iverson was called for a technical, giving Milwaukee a 95-87 advantage with 1:39 left. After Iverson converted a pair of free throws, Allen punctuated his performance with a 13-foot jumper in the lane with 54 seconds left and a free throw with 45 seconds remaining. "Ray had the hot hand tonight and we rode him," Robinson said. "That's the nice thing about this team, Sam, Ray or myself are going to have it going. That's the good thing about having a bunch of scoring threats out there, somebody is going to be on." The Bucks had lost the last six meetings with the Sixers and blew a five-point lead in the final minute in a 107-104 loss on February 13. "This is big because we've blown these games to Philadelphia during the last two years," said Bucks coach George Karl. "If we're fortunate we can maybe someday play Philly in a playoff series and it helps us that we have two more games against them in the regular season. They are going to be battles, and fun to play."
