Blair Hilton whipped a ball into the D from a long corner; Hugo Inglis at full stretch got the deflection past Quico Cortes. Andres Mir was inches away from an equaliser, his low shot off a short corner clipped the post. Spain came close again a minute before half time. Good control and speed from Oliva Roc to spin away from his marker, he found David Alegre, but couldn't get enough power on the shot. The second half was equally tight; neither nation got the upper hand. New Zealand came close, great link up play down the left between Shay Neal and Alex Shaw. Shaw at full stretch was denied a certain goal by smart defence from Bosco Perez-Pla Spain were also thwarted by stellar defence. Cory Bennett read Gabriel Dabanchs' short corner flick perfectly to deny the Spanish an equaliser. Spain's best chance fell to David Alegre. With a minute and a half left in the match the Spanish Captain found space in the D but was denied by desperate New Zealand defence. The Black Sticks will now face Belgium in Friday's Semi Final.
