- description: Set across multiple timelines Azaad is a film about nostalgia, national pride, India’s freedom struggle and an ode to an era when freedom was a luxury. The story is about Azaad a 40-year-old man returning to his homeland after many years with his wife Akira in tow. On Azaad’s drive home, a memory trigger is set off while in conversation with his taxi driver, Toba Nek Singh. Azaad reminisces the story told by his grandfather, Aga Khan, who played a small role in India’s freedom struggle. The film is essentially the story of Aga and his three friends, cycling through the desert, being chased by the British soldiers as they strive to deliver a special package essential to fight the British Raj. As the narrator, Aga Khan explains in detail, his escape and eventual success. The film cuts between three time periods. The period of the actual incident with Aga and his friends; to a time when the Azaad is being told the story as a little boy by Aga; and then to the present as Azaad is returning home. Throughout the three timelines, we see how nothing has changed with respect to India’s pride of its independence and the film strives to reaffirm that pride all over again. Azaad explores a time when the freedom struggle was in full swing and takes the viewer through a slice of that time with music and visual poetry. The film written and directed by Chandan Roy Sanyal has been produced by Shariq Patel & Trigno Media for Sony LIV. A strong team of actors and technicians have contributed to the end product making this a film worthy of a watch this Independence Day.
