If you try customizing your own jacket (or other clothing item), make sure you use a brush-on fabric paint. I am using Tulip Matte Paint (links below), but you need a fabric paint that is thin and opaque to do a "painting" like this. You can use puffy paint for more simplistic designs/lettering.
