The event took place in anticipation of the 250-mile long human chain, known as the "Catalan Way", that will take place on September 11th in Catalonia. Participants met at noon in Central Park's Sheep Meadow for a picnic sponsored by the Catalan Institute of America and to finalize the logistical details for the event. At 3pm they rehearsed the event joining hands and forming a human chain that crossed Sheap Meadow from one end to another against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. These images will constitute a great addition to the video that the Catalan National Assembly will soon release to promote the September 11th human chain in Catalonia. Over 100 such events are being held worldwide in places of historic and symbolic importance. After the rehearsal in Central Park the participants headed towards Times Square to carry out the rehearsed human chain. Along the way, they filled the streets with Catalan flags and yellow t-shirts. At Times Square the crowd grew so large that police and security officers, responding to safety concerns, did not allow the human chain to unfold as planned. Overwhelmed by the unexpectedly large crowd they asked the organizers to perform a different type of event and facilitated the bleachers overlooking Times Square for participants to gather instead. The human chain thus became a massive celebration with chants for independence and an emotional performance of Els Segadors, the Catalan national anthem. The gathering in Times Square also turned into the largest event in support of Catalan independence ever to take place in the United States.
