Baaki sab #theekhai (Our PM is weak, but rest is fine) Indians turned to Twitter and Facebook to vent their anger over the rape of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi on Dec 16. On Monday, some of the strongest criticism was for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for a televised statement asking people to stay calm. Mr. Singh was referring to protests in the capital over the weekend, which had turned violent, injuring some 85 protesters and police personnel. Mr. Singh, in his statement, promised the government would take steps to ensure the safety of women in India. But at the end of the video, Mr. Singh looked up from his written text to ask "Theek hai?" (Is that okay?). It appeared as if he was asking the cameraman or producers if his performance was adequate. Twitter-users latched on to Mr. Singh's "Theek hai", with some saying that this was the only moment in an otherwise dry speech in which he showed any emotion. "Theek hai" became the most trending phrase on Twitter in India on Monday. "Sorry, but PM's speech was without feeling, wooden and totally unequal to the situation. The 'theek hai' at the end revealed it as theatre!" tweeted TV personality Sagarika Ghose (@sagarikaghose). Bollywood actor Anupam Kher (@AnupamPkher) said Mr. Singh's expression when he said "Theek Hai" "was d most Candid & Natural expression I have EVER seen from him.:)" Other tweeters said that things were in fact not okay, as the alleged rapists had not yet been punished. "No Mr Prime Minister it is no longer #TheekHai ," wrote Prakash Sharma (@Prakash_Sharma), a regular Twitter user. He added "We are done with this status quo, chalta hai (everything goes) attitude." A spokesman for Mr. Singh declined to comment. Another politician drawing flak on Monday was Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, who told TV channel CNN-IBN (@ibnlive) on Monday, that the government cannot meet with all protesters everywhere. "Tomorrow Maoists may demonstrate I cannot go and meet them," Mr. Shinde said in the interview. Twitter users were angry that Mr. Shinde was comparing anti-rape protestors to Maoists. "Wat do u want to indicate by comparin d protestors to maoists Mr.Shinde #stopthisshame," wrote Twitter user Prachi (@prachi_pr). Attempts to reach a spokesman for Mr. Shinde were not successful. Meanwhile, people are signing up for an online petition -- being widely circulated on Facebook -- asking for fast-track courts to try rape cases and for more stringent punishment. It's not alright, not for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Just as he finished his televised speech to the nation about the gangrape of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi, he asked the cameraperson "theek hai?" (did it go alright?). The blooper was watched by millions and #theekhai" became the top trending Twitter topic. Twitter wits lost no time in ridiculing the prime minister and at last count at least 560 #theekhai" tweets had been posted at the last count, according to SAP Social Media Analytics, a software which tracks the Internet for a topic. "Hamara PM weak hai. Baaki sab #theekhai (Our PM is weak, but rest is fine)," tweeted @JoyDas."Monday mornings never so fun. Thank you @PMOIndia--#theekhai," tweeted @SumeetCJ. The PM's speech didn't seem to have impressed people on Twitter and his blooper may add to the impression that his government had done little to calm anger against rapes in the country. Some reacted with anger. "Girls are raped, protestors are injured, Accused are not being hanged, par sab #TheekHai," tweeted @kartik_kapur.Singh, in a brief address on television on Monday, appealed to the people to maintain peace and calm, and said that "violence will serve no purpose". He said action would be taken against the rapists who committed the "ghastly" act on the woman. "There is genuine and justified anger and anguish at this ghastly incident," the prime minister said, adding: "I assure you that we will make all possible efforts to ensure security and safety of women in this country." The prime minister referred to the steps earlier announced by Home Minister Shushilkumar Shinde and said: "The home minister has already spoken about the steps being taken. We will examine without delay not only the responses to this terrible crime but also all aspects concerning the safety of women and children."
