  • description: Here in America, and especially here in the southern states, we skeptical secular agnostic atheists often complain about how oppressive or omnipresent the religious factions are in a country that promises religious freedom. It's so much easier to be an outspoken atheist in America, in Australia, or the UK than it is in a lot of other countries. I sometimes get emails from young atheist activists from the mediterranian through southern Asia, and I'm impressed they even exist; their plight is so much graver than ours. When people in these areas are brave enough to come out and speak up, it is that much more admirable, because it is that much more serious, and it matters so much that they deserve recognition. Imagine holding an atheist convention in the middle-east. Well, as hard as that is for some of us to imagine, it seems that there is an Israeli Atheist Association, and they are holding a convention, a sort of Israeli Reason Rally. They're calling it MA-HA-R, Hebrew for 'tomorrow'. It's also supposed to be written as a Hebrew acronym for: science - freedom -- rational. And for whatever reason, this group have asked me and a couple other YouTubers to do promotional videos inviting Israeli atheists to attend. They didn't give me much warning. The event is on January 10th at the Z.O.A conference center in Tel Aviv. There will be lectures from leading scientists about space, psychology, evolution, and robots among other things. There will also be panels about web activists, skepticism, secularism and nationality, as well as workshops and open discussions, and of course an after party. The goal is to create a safe place for the Israeli atheist community to come mingle and take action. To expose the general public to atheism, science and skepticism, to show them we don't bite, and to gather donations and volunteers in order to fight against the rise of religion in Israel. The political situation they endure is obviously more severe than what we currently have in the US. Otherwise they describe political factions in their country as being similar to America's religious right --just with less pork. They say they're not a theocracy yet, but the demography is headed that way, and they want to raise awareness that it should be stopped while there is still time. http://www.israel2morrow.co.il/#!english/c1baf http://www.facebook.com/events/227705967362716/?fref=ts
