An explosion rocked a crowded area just outside the metal detectors leading into the train station's main hall at 12:45 p.m., news reports said, citing investigators and eyewitnesses. The National Anti-Terrorism Committee said a female suicide bomber was responsible for the explosion, which also injured more than 40 people. "Someone tried to get inside the train station but was not allowed in," an unidentified law enforcement official told Vysota 102, a local news agency. "After that an explosion went off." Other news reports said a police officer had noticed a suspicious-looking woman and, when he appoached her, the explosion went off. At least 13 people were killed in the blast, said Vladimir Markin, spokesman for the Investigative Committee. RIA-Novosti, citing local authorities, put the death toll at 15. Among the dead was a police officer responsible for checking people entering the train station, RIA Novosti reported. Three other police officers were injured. A child was also killed, while a 9-year-year girl was hospitalized in serious condition, according to Kremlin children rights commissioner Pavel Astakhov. In all, 27 people were hospitalized with various injuries, RIA Novosti said. Volgograd regional authorities canceled all New Year's festivities and declared Jan. 1-3 as official days of mourning. The governor's office said the families of those who were killed would receive 1 million rubles ($30,680) each in compensation.
