You may find that you can get away with more carbohydrates then you previously thought. What you are aiming to do is not really travel much above level 8 - one to two hours after eating - so first step is testing. First and foremost you need to start testing blood sugars every day, make it a part of your daily routine. You could set an alarm on your phone to remind yourself, perhaps, or have your monitor by the bed for your morning fasting glucose measurement. In addition try and test after 1 and 2 hours after every meal and every time you snack on something. Don't get caught up if your sugars spike, remember you are being non-judgemental and you are just paying attention, this is information gathering so you can take clearer action very soon. The important thing is that you're starting the journey of paying attention. Denial can kill someone with diabetes as effectively as heart disease and you will be dismantling this illness and any residual denial. Be kind to yourself and gather the information. High sugars can make you feel awful but the most dangerous thing is that they are invisible. When the effect of food on your body becomes concrete and measurable you will be in a better position to change things.
