The premier announces that all publicly funded and private elementary and secondary schools in the province will move to remote learning when students return from the school break on April 19. Private schools are to transition to remote learning by April 15. The decision is being made in response to the surge in COVID-19 cases, the increasing risks posed by COVID-19 variants, and the large spike in hospital admissions. A province-wide stay-at-home order has been in effect since April 8. Additional restrictions were placed on retail businesses, but schools were allowed to remain open. Toronto and Peel Region made the decision to close their schools to in-class learning until April 18.
