- description: A 19-year-old tells police he was stabbed by thugs on a towpath - only for the truth to be found on a mobile phone video. An embarrassed teenager who smashed his head in a bungled attempt to jump a canal has been fined after telling police he was stabbed and thrown in the water by thugs. The 19-year-old was ordered to pay £80 for wasting police time after officers found footage of his botched leap on a mobile phone. He made up the story and called police to avoid telling his family how he had really received his injuries, claiming hooded thugs stabbed him in the chin with a 10-inch knife on the towpath in Dudley, West Midlands. Officers investigated a lead that the three men were linked to threatening text messages sent to his 25-year-old stepfather. They carried out a high-tech forensic examination of his stepfather's phone - only to discover video of the jump. In the 15-second footage, he runs at the canal but completely misjudges the jump and smashes his chin on the concrete edge before falling backwards into the water. The unnamed teenager is then seen sprawled on the towpath, crying out in agony, as his stepfather continues to film. West Midlands Police released the video as a warning to other people thinking of wasting police time. Detective Sergeant Jim Munro said: "We found a video on the phone which showed our supposed victim attempting to jump across the canal. "That's when we knew he'd actually made the whole thing up and that even his stepfather was in on the conspiracy. "Both were arrested for perverting the course of justice and immediately admitted that it was all fabrication. "They were both fined but they were lucky, because wasting police time carries a maximum sentence of six months' imprisonment."
