- description: England footballer Steven Gerrard punched a businessman 'with the style and speed of a professional boxer' in a row at a bar, a court heard yesterday. The Liverpool captain 'totally lost it' and launched a series of uppercuts at 34-year-old Marcus McGee's head during a night out as he celebrated his side's 5-1 victory over Newcastle United, it was claimed. Gerrard, 29, had allegedly asked him to hand over the control to the bar's CD player so he could change the music, saying: 'Give me that, lad.' But Mr McGee had been offended by his attitude and refused, a jury heard. The trial at Liverpool Crown Court was told Gerrard, a father of two, would claim he was acting in self-defence, saying he believed Mr McGee was going to hit him. However, David Turner, QC, prosecuting, said 'this was never self-defence in a hundred years' and that the truth was that Mr McGee had been attacked because he was 'the man who said "No" to Steven Gerrard'. He added: 'On this occasion, Steven Gerrard's fists, not his feet, did the talking. He let himself down.' The millionaire footballer denies a single charge of affray, which carries a maximum sentence of three years' imprisonment. Five men who were with him have admitted the same offence. The alleged incident happened at the Lounge Inn, in Southport, Merseyside, in the early hours of December 29 last year, after Gerrard had scored twice to help Liverpool stay top of the Premiership. Singing, dancing and in high spirits, the party met up with Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish and were joined by a number of young women, the jury heard. CCTV footage of the crucial minutes was released yesterday after it had been played in court. The court heard Mr McGee, who was at the bar with a separate group, had been in charge of music for a party being held there. He was using a special card which enabled him to change songs even though he was not the venue's DJ.
