Lake Worth girl rescued by family pit bull after vicious dog attack

- description: LAKE WORTH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida family is hailing their pit bull a hero after the canine raced to protect their little girl from a vicious attack by their neighbor's dog. Remayah Hernandez, 5, paid a painful price for trying to pet her neighbor's Labrador. "He bit me in the face, and I went to the hospital because I got bitten by the lips," she said. The dog's owner said he couldn't understand why his Labrador would maul the child. "He was just a great dog, he was a very nice dog," said Nehemias Gaspar, the owner of the Labrador. Gaspar's canine was killed by Hernandez's pit bull, named Trigger, after he jumped a fence to come to Remayah's rescue. "He's like a hero," said Remayah's mother, Lucila Hernandez. "He's a protective dog. We taught him to be protective and caring for the family." "He's a superhero," said Remayah. Meanwhile, Gaspar still cannot grasp what caused his dog to become so violent. "I sincerely believe inside of me that my dog is innocent," said Gaspar. "It's very unfortunate what happened, but I'm more worried about the girl, now that my dog is gone." Remayah's mother is just as concerned for her daughter. "She's a tough cookie," said Lucila. "I think I was crying more than she was." Meanwhile, the family is very relieved no one else on their street will get attacked in the future. "This would never have happened to her if he would have just kept his dog where he belongs, in the house or tied up," said Lucila. Remayah's family was saving money for a trip to Disney World, but had to ultimately use it to pay for her plastic surgery. They have set up a new account to raise money to help pay for that trip.
