  • description: People who come to Britain without a guarantee of a job and secure accommodation face sleeping rough and risk being robbed and even set on fire by yobs, according to the Polish-language film funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government. The rise in economic migrants from eastern Europe becoming destitute after losing jobs, often in the faltering construction industry, has alarmed charities. Nearly a third of rough sleepers in London are from Central or Eastern Europe, recent studies show, with one in ten from Poland alone. The stark three-minute film aimed at would-be migrants, entitled Before You Go and released online yesterday, charts the fate of three Polish migrants to Britain. Andzrej tells the audience he has a large family home and an expensive car after preparing carefully before moving to Britain and working "very hard" for a decade. "I came to England well prepared. And now I have what I dreamed about. But for thousands of Poles who come to the UK this reality is far from the truth," he says.He reveals his wife, Agnieszka, a qualified nurse, was unable to find work in hospitals due to her poor English and became a cleaner. She lost all her savings to a dishonest landlord, the film says. Jacek, who comes to Britain in search of "work and a better life", suffers a worse fate. He loses his job as a casual labourer after a workplace injury, and with no entitlement to welfare he becomes a homeless alcoholic. Until recently, migrants from Poland had no right to Job Seekers' Allowance unless they had a record of National Insurance payments. The film shows him being mugged by thieves before being set alight in his sleeping bag. Badly burnt, he returns to Poland. "I hope one day my family will be proud of me," he says, weeping, alongside images of his mother praying in church. Andzrej advises viewers to not come to Britain without a guaranteed job, a National Insurance number, accommodation with a reputable landlord and £600 of emergency funds to return home. The film is produced by The Passage, a charity for rough sleepers, and is backed by the Polish Embassy in London and the British Embassy in Warsaw. Mark Prisk, the Housing Minister, said: "Sadly too many rough sleepers are foreign nationals who arrived in the UK without realistic prospects and as a result ended up with a life on the streets. That is something no one should have to face and The Passage's 'Before you Go' campaign is about making sure people considering coming to Britain understand the risks if they are unable to support themselves." Britain is home to more than half a million Polish-born people according to the 2011 census, a seven-fold increase since 2003.
